Poul Wathne's projects in Denmark

It is vital to develop a cosmopolitan common sense, a healthy world civic sense.

Therefore, skills in cooperation across cultures are vital for our common survival.

Guldkorn fra en elektronik-guru

Kan man vжre over 60 og noget sе nшrdet som elektroingeniшr og alligevel have rockstjerne-status?

Sе er man en taber.

ФYou can study your own culture, you can understand it and you can live it. You can study other peoples culture, you can understand it, but you cannot live it. To live it, you need to have skill. Skill you can only get if you live with the people, if you integrate by being apart of them. If you donТt do that, forget it.Ф

Can you be over 60 and something as nerdy as an electrical engineer and still have rock star status?
Yes, Poul Wathnes courses is not about diodes, but about how to behave in a future where labor and jobs constantly crosses borders, and only men of the world will be fine.
By Anne Winther

It's a bit of a scoop having been Professor Poul Wathne and his course in International Management to KEA. And the man teach even just a few of the lessons themselves. Yes, it is he who organize and plan the whole course, but most hours are guest teachers, who leads the floor.
And this is precisely one of the points:
"After 32 years in Tanzania course, I stand up and talk about women's culture, but the framework is not in the same way as when I have a woman from Tanzania, who talk about their situation there. It slips right into it immediately. When I on the other hand speaks, it becomes somewhat theoretical something that students observe and perceive "that 'Poul telling'," while guest teaching is the real deal - the original, "says Poul Wathne, adding that another reason why
he always uses guest teachers is to open the students' eyes to the fact that in the big world there is actually someone who knows something and can do something.
Mohammed writes a thesis on energiteknologuddannelsen and have taken the course in international management, which among other things, taught him a lot about the countries he by then, had only a superficial knowledge.

"The guest teachers coming out, is someone who works with these issues every day and have experience, and it's always good to get the nugget that way - especially if you want to see the big world and not confined to Denmark.
And Paul makes some provocative questions that make you think - he's a nice chap of his age. "

Poul Wathne draws on a lifetime of experience with construction work abroad - in particular Africa and the new tiger economies and in the course of the semester, students have benefited from the pinger, personalities and professors from countries including the Foreign Ministry, the U.S. and Chinese embassies, universities and
large private enterprises.

Most of the students who took the elective here at KEA reader for energy technologist.
But in fact be the subject available in all programs, and be not just super rewarding, but also an eye opener for most people.
Today, Shehzad Ahmad told about IT security in the wider world, which he daily handles for PET, the Danish parliament and universities.

Afterwards it was time to Anila Bakhsk, there is international social worker. What f ..... the students with a social worker, you may ask. But the fact is that the students during their 50-year working life either going to work abroad, or want to meet people who have come to Denmark by many research reasons.
Anila tells what the causes are, so when the students come out and be bosses and work with someone who looks different, so they have a sense of other people and their background.
Anila also tells about it often happens, that you meet the love when you leave and come back with a spouse to be integrated into Danish society, and how to do it best.

There has been great demand and interest from the students. The last team was 42, and they add it on Linkedin as a competence.
However, international understanding is also incredibly important if they want to survive - especially as leaders.

Within the past 10 years, Denmark has lost 200,000 jobs, and by 2020 we will according to U.S. think tanks lose between 50-60,000 jobs to the Far East and Africa, which hurtles forward.
"There are 10 countries in Africa, running as strong as China. People think that Africa is only what they see on television when there is relief collections. When I started working in Tanzania in 1980, there were two universities, now there are 27
East Africa is very advanced in IT - longer than Denmark - and in competition with the other leading country, India, to take over the world market, "says Poul Wathne.

On the other hand, we have created 1.5 million jobs in the world in the past 10 years.
The jobs are owned or co-owned by Danish companies, and many of the students at KEA's going to work for them or to foreign companies for shorter or longer time.

Or else they're going to work with people from outside who come to Denmark.
Last year alone we got 15,000 highly skilled foreigners to Danish business because we do not train well enough and did not have enough people within the given areas.
And yes, we have an economic crisis that began in the United States, but it is not the whole truth.
Within education, development and innovation, we have the past 15 years lost to other nations who are hungry - not for food, but for progress.
"We Danes think we are much more innovative than other countries, because our children are forming in school. Unfortunately, the fact that if one has to be innovative - and innovation is not to draw small flowers on a piece of paper - you have to have knowledge. And knowledge is achieved by hard work. It is not about being smart or play football, "says Poul Wathne.
In a few days he travels to China to teach the entire month of May and beginning hours 7.30 am and ends kl.23 the evening.

"When I'm in Africa, it is about the same. There is a different determination to learn as much as possible.
In Denmark we have enjoyed it more such 'Now let the baby, you gotta feel good, we are all equally gifted ...' "

When Poul Wathne to China, it is because they have the same problems that we have.
They also establish businesses elsewhere in the world, and they must also manage and work with people from other cultures.
And if you have to work together across borders, and if you want to create something that is of benefit to Denmark, one needs to understand each other - not only in intelligence, but also culturally. You should be able to absorb each other.
If you can not, it will not work, says Poul Wathne:
"You can not come from Slagelse and believe that Slagelse is the world's navel. To everything there is made in Slagelse is right, and the culture that is in Slagelse, is the right and the other is something strange strange thing. Then you are a loser.
One has to lift itself from the point of view and think internationally. "
Poul Wathnes mission is to raise the students and their perspective from Denmark and up the satellite height, so they see that something is happening out there - they have a worldview.

"You can not move people in as few lessons that I have available, because it is not just reading something in a book - it must also be understood in the heart.
But I can help to spur development, "says Poul Wathne and turns into English:
"You can study your own culture, kan understand it and kan live it. Du kan study other peoples culture, kan understand it, but you can not live it. Two live it, you need to have skill. Skill you can only get if you live with the people, if you integrate by being apart of dem.
If you do not do that, forget it. "

When he in his time traveled traveled out as a professor in Tanzania, all the white located in an area called Valhalla, and the only black was maid. But when Poul Wathne had lived there for half a year, he said stop. If he had to work and teach, and if it should be for the benefit of Tanzanians and for the country, as was the need to understand each other as people.
So he went to the Ministry of Education and asked to be moved into the city.

"Everyone warned me that it was ih and oh so dangerous, but I got rid of everything I owned and got an apartment in the middle of the city.
And so began my development, "says Poul Wathne.

Last year, when he was in China to teach, he lived in one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. This time he asked to stay on campus.
"I want to be with the students and the other professors - it is moving something in itself."
